Chapter fourteen

The night before, after getting with Neary to say hello, Hannah managed to get a decent night’s sleep. Even if she felt a bit giddy and excited. Portia was, she had to admit, pretty cool. It also seemed like, at the very least, Hannah was going to get to hook up with her at some point. Still, the feeling in the pit of her stomach when she thought about that was different.

Not that she believed in love at first sight or anything foolish like that.

It wasn’t until the next morning, when she rolled out of bed, at six, got ready for the day, drank some coffee and was doing her various mental exercises, trying to be good, that she noticed that something was actually off, in that situation.

In fact, she was sitting, cross legged, floating above the sofa, while making the coffee table move in a circle around her and trying to read minds in a general way when she heard it. It was a soft thing at first, mainly made up of a feeling, rather than words, in particular. A sense, instead of anything more concrete. It was that Port, her new pink haired buddy, was having sex.

Which, when her mind caught the idea, she realized that it wasn’t just the girl getting lucky, she was having an orgy. With all of her roommates. A thing that, Hannah had to admit, wasn’t expected. As her mind closed in on the scene though, she caught a lot more, which was the darker, or perhaps, just different portion of things.

Hannah wasn’t a prude, after all. While group sex wasn’t really her big thing in bed, she’d done that sort of stuff herself, more than once in her life. Plus, even if a bit of jealousy was kicking in, even she understood that it was mainly about wanting to get laid herself, not a feeling of betrayal or anything. She wasn’t dating anyone involved, after all. So it wasn’t that. It was a sense of something really off happening. A thing that she didn’t understand, mainly because she was working in such a deep trance state.

For the first time, or as she understood as she actually tried to do the work needed, the first time that she’d tried to do such a thing on purpose, Hannah actually took thoughts from other people’s minds. Reading their actual secrets, instead of just hearing what was on the surface as they thought. It had happened before, but she hadn’t been doing it. Not like this.

It was invasive of her, and probably creepy, but what she found was...

Different. Plus, she was warping the story from four different minds at one time, which meant big parts of it weren’t clear. She had some guesses, based on what she was taking from them.

The three roommates had spent the entire night pushing Portia to agree to date all of them. They’d all had sex before, possibly, but the prospect of getting rich, or at least attaching themselves to a suddenly wealthy friend, had kicked them into action.
